Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar Episode One: LAVA LA RUE

BURRWHOLEPNGWelcome to BURR. Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar.

In this series, Brighton hip-hop DJ, Matt ‘Brickcellphone’ Leppier, is chatting to some of the underground rap talent on his radar. It’s as simple as that. Follow him @brickcellphone and listen to him spin some of these artists on Friday afternoons on Platform B.

If you don’t know Lava La Rue by now then who are you, really?

Stop reading this interview immediately and go listen to her music, go check out her art, go follow Nine8 Collective. Do the right thing.

Lava La Rue is possibly the busiest person in the UK, splitting her time between making music, making art, being swaggy and, as we find out in this interview, making food for the London-based creatives, the Nine8 Collective.

So, I am going to start with this… the hardest question you can ask anyone. Don’t worry; it gets easier from here. What’s your top 5 dead or alive?

You mean top 5 people? Icons? Musicians? Animals??

Imma go with all 3

5. Erykah Badu aka Fat Belly Bella

4. Bahamadia

3. Ogartoof aka Ragofoot

2. Aaliyah

1. Gangsta Boo

Can you tell us what Nine8 Collective is and what role you play in it?

Nine8 Collective is a London grown DIY underground arts + music collective using creative currency and little resources to curate and create experimental music, clothes and events. I mother the function as a creative director, grip the mic as Lava, make cover art, music videos and clothes under Lavaland. We throw parties when appropriate and I occasionally (often) feed this group of sweaty teenage geniuses when we’ve been in the studio all day.

If you could hone in on only one craft, which would it be… art or music?

That’s like making someone choose between the existence of oxygen or water when they’re both made of the same matter. If you’re tryna figure what trade I lean towards, I see it as music being my oxygen and art as my water. I’d die instantly without my oxygen but suffer slowly n eventually die without that hydration.

I know it’s a lame question, but what’s your dream collaboration?

Not lame. On a large scale Erykah Badu or Busta Rhymes on the production somewhere. But currently, I’d love to do a project with Show Me The Body or an obscure collab with Homeshake. I reckon Dev from Blood Orange could ghost write a banging track for me, too, as he’s good at ghost-writing hahahaha jk I write my own lyrics always. He could give me a hook @ most.

You and a bossman or bosslady are trapped on a desert island… What three items do you get them to bring with them from their shop?

Other than basic survival tools, (like, if this is an imaginative way to scale down 3 essential items when I’m popping to the offie) prolly unlimited Cherry B 4-packs, Buzz fizzy blue bottle sweets and non-bleached king size papers if we stumble across a tropical ganja plantation like that one film with Tidla Swinton n Leo Dicaprio.
