Welcome to BURR. Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar.

In this series, Brighton hip-hop DJ, Matt ‘Brickcellphone’ Leppier, is chatting to some of the underground rap talent on his radar. It’s as simple as that. Follow him @brickcellphone and listen to him spin some of these artists on Friday afternoons on Platform B.

V7 AKA 7 AKA Voldy Moyo, was born in South Africa to a Congolese mother and Zimbabwean father, he spent 11 years in Africa and moved to England in 2012.

He’s just 16 years old and Mr 2007 is making a super 2018 brand of music influenced by everything around him. He’s got a sizeable catalogue up on Soundcloud dating back to just 3 months ago and a handful of music videos on YouTube – each of them a bit tongue and cheek and a bit very good, too.

Voldy has a strong affinity with the number 7 because of – believe it or not – BRITNEY, BITCH. Voldy and Britney Spears share the same birthday. The 7 is taken from 2007, an infamous year for Britney.

So, your tune 7 has been out now for a few months. Out of all the feedback you’ve received what has been the most impactful to you?

Definitely from my big bros YS Tekdinner and Masterpeace. They’ve since grouped me as part of 12 No Standards.

We haven’t really had too many chances to see anyone in the rap scene born after the millennium. With that in mind, how does your sound differ from your older peers?

I think it differs mainly because of the internet, with the likes of YouTube etc. Tbf, you can sort of get influences from all mediums, that’s the main reason that you’ll find a lot of my music sounds similar to stuff you’ve already heard from America but in a more British way.

Whose sound do you fuck with the most at the moment?

Can’t lie… I’m fucking with Jimothy Lacoste quite a lot right now. But I’ve also been listening to a lot of Bakar and slowthai.

What can we expect in the future?

Just madness. It’s all down to whether or not my mum will be cool with me coming down to London for some time, but as of right now, man, I’m just banging out maths past papers for my GCSEs.

What’s your favourite Rubicon flavour?

Has to be mango flavour bro, come on.

If you have anything else to add, then do it now.

Yeah, my latest track is up on SoundCloud now and I’ve got a new song with a video coming soon… Ooooo and a Lilthaiprince (Pump Fake) feature in the pipeline 77777…
