Welcome to BURR. Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar.
In this series, Brighton hip-hop DJ, Matt ‘Brickcellphone’ Leppier, is chatting to some of the underground rap talent on his radar. It’s as simple as that. Follow him @brickcellphone and listen to him spin some of these artists on Friday afternoons on Platform B.
Nottingham based rapper-producer, Slacs Bianci, is always in the lab cooking up music for people to fall asleep to whilst smoking.
With his debut release ‘SLUMPED’ only being out as of this year, he has since been working on ‘SLUMPED 2,’ whilst playing shows around the UK. That next album drops on July 30th and before that hits your ears, get to know Mr Bianci a little better with this latest instalment of B.U.R.R.
Man like Slacs. How do you think the scene in Nottingham is comparable to the rest of the UK, does your style of music generally get a good reception or are there a lot of haters?
I think the primary difference is there’s much more versatility in other scenes of the UK. For instance, Birmingham is popping for the wavey shit at the moment. Notts is primarily grime and bassline, so my music is completely out of the box in comparison to the current scene here. I get a lot of love for what I do in Notts but real talk there’s a lot of people hating. I notice most people that fuck with me are actually from outside of Notts – I’m not complaining though, haha.
When can we expect to hear Slumped 2 and how does it differ from Slumped?
My beats are much thicker in texture this time around, hella’ bassier. Lyrically, I speak a lot deeper – personal stuff – but it’s important to not to make them matters too detailed. The best art is the kind that’s open for interpretation, especially in music. It amazes me when I can speak something about my personal battles but someone I don’t know can interpret it to be something they can relate to within their own issues. It’s ill.
Who are you fucking with the most at the moment, who inspires and influences your sound?
As for artists that influence my sound, it’s usually artists that don’t really fall under the category of rap music. I listen to all kinds of shit, which makes me get inspired easily and it can be for the littlest of reasons. I’d have to say King Krule, Mac Demarco, Ski Mask, Kodak Black, Big L, Doom… oh and definitely MGMT. Them man were the waviest dons back in the day. As for fellow artists I collaborate with that I fuck with, it has to be Morphine Boys, Bakes & Odox no doubt. We all fully fuck with each other’s music so the chemistry to create is great. There are loads more up ‘n’ coming man in Notts I fuck with, too that will definitely make an impact in coming years.
You’re first headline show was a few months ago, how was that?
The show was soooo surreal. Having bare people I don’t know sing my bars back to me and be so captivated with the unreleased stuff was hella motivating. Shit got shut DOWN! Made me even more grateful for the fam I have too. My Day 1 brother, Tommy helped organise it, and my main G DBIIJOU was on the door as SLUMPED Security – man didn’t take no shit! Amongst the fans, I even had my girlfriend front row singing all my bars in SLUMPED merch, so big up the clique.
Magnum or Cherry B?
Out of every question you’ve asked me this is genuinely the most difficult. Cherry B has the advantage of value for money, but Magnum has the advantage of flavour. Fuck it, it’s gonna have to be Magnum hands down.
If you have anything else to add, then fucking go for it!
I got so many music videos, collaborations & shows on the way once SLUMPED 2 is out! Expect another album in winter, too. Also a massive big up to Owain (Founder of Revolt Mag & Odox’s manager) for booking me for shows in Birmingham and pushing my music across the UK. Finally, big up Off Licence Magazine & Brickcellphone, it’s been a pleasure!
