Welcome to BURR. Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar.
In this series, Brighton hip-hop DJ, Matt ‘Brickcellphone’ Leppier, is chatting to some of the underground rap talent on his radar. It’s as simple as that. Follow him @brickcellphone and listen to him spin some of these artists on Offie Mag Radio.
There’s an international flavour to this episode as we chat to Objuan, the American-accented rapper and producer whose work rate on our shores have seen him become a force in British underground hip-hop.
Collabs with the likes of looms., Lord Apex and Mr Slipz have put Obijuan on Brickcellphone’s Underground Rap Radar before, but, fresh off the release of his most recent body of work, full court rappin, it seemed a good time to chat.
Let’s get into it…
First things first, introduce yourself. What’s your name and where you from?
Ay, what’s good? I’m Obijuan, a rapper from the Bahamas kicking this side of the globe these days…
I guess the only real ties I have to the underground UK scene are there ’caused I moved here a couple years back and just started meeting artists, doing shows and collabing with other artists, as you do.
A lot of people want to talk about ‘lo-fi’ as it’s own genre, what’s your opinion on that?
Man, the image associated with lo-fi hip hop is fucked up these days, dude. People turned it into some corny meme, but really it’s not a sub-genre at all; it’s a sound. Lo-fi music isn’t a new thing like so many think – it doesn’t mean “simple loop slow hip-hop beat” and it sure as fuck doesn’t mean “beat littered with 404fx.”
It’s just the sound you get from the mix/samples… gritty and hollow… it’s simply the opposite of hi-fi!
Tell us about the new project – what can we expect?
full court rappin is exactly what it sounds like.
Whole thing is produced by Fat B (F@ B), all raps by me… 10 tracks, straight raps down the whole court, no breaks. I definitely switched up the tone on this album from my last few, but that’s all I can really say.
Well, that and make sure you go cop the vinyl whilst they’re going.
Who are your favourite spitters in the UK right now?
Not gunna lie, I’m not super hip with all the UK spitters but as far as the homies go it’s always mad love for looms., M9, clbrks, Lord Apex… Conrad Mundy straight illin! Verb T always shows love, got mad respect for him… Yogocop Records are doing their thing, too, no doubt! Other than that, I’m pretty lost in the UK scene to be honest.
You’ve got 3 quid and 23 pence in your pocket and you’re in an offie. What are you buying?
Prolly Raws, clipper, water… if not those things then as many packs of spicy ramen it’ll get me.
Anything else you wanna add?
Only other thing I can think of is to promoters, radio shows and all people who pay rappers: hit me up!! let’s get this work!
