BURR 36: Kemastry (CMPND)
Following the Brighton-based CMPND’s latest release, there’s been something of a takeover going on at Offie Mag.
Wundrop, Vitamin G and Kemastry have walked into our offie and turned into Eagle Court with three exclusive interviews… done in Spoons. Here’s what Kema had to say.
Alright mate, can you introduce yourself for those who may not know ya?
I’m Kemastry aka Huff Jenks aka Don Surf, Donald Surfaces aka KEMPZ but only for the Grime verses.
How did CMPND start?
Me and Wundrop had the rough idea of doing Frosty Raps 2 and then Vitz was just round all the time and the whole sound evolved init and Vitz was there. We are more powerful as a trio. Then we face-fucked it.
How important is it to get your friends on this tape?
It’s all gang. There are so many heads that we know that are fucking dope so if your verse deserves to be on there it will be – you’re my mate because you’re sick init.
How does your solo music differ from CMPND’s sound?
My solo shit is a lot slower, way sadder. A lot more feeling sorry for myself. I don’t really have time to do that on the CMPND shit, it’s nice to be able to have the opportunity to do that separately.
Did you listen to any High Focus rappers growing up?
I have a really strong memory of the first High Focus track I listened to, it was Life in the Balance, standard stoner track, being a little stoner kid. I remember hearing it and being like “WHAT IS THIS MAN??!!!! THIS IS SICK” and then from there I just listened to all the fucking staples, I could never really delve fully into UK Hip Hop shit until after I started making it. I’d listen to Pork Pie and all the bait ones init, still bangs though all that High Focus shit.
Do you offer something different from other High Focus artists?
100% – the whole UK scene has changed though, it’s nice to be near the forefront of it, init. It’s hybrid. It’s not one dimensional.
Can you tell us about Nubian Zombies?
It needs fine-tuning – but it’s ready. We had leftover stuff from Eagle Court, we are using whoever we can steal beats off. It’s well racist that album, well it was originally – we were only gunna have black people on it, but we got Hutch and a few other honourary Nubians.
Describe the new tape in three words?
Neon. Sleaze. Deludamol.
Just popping to the shops, can I get you anything?
Magnum and a Sprite – actually I’ll get a Lamborghini as well.
