BURR 38: BaggE

We turn the attention of the Underground Rap Radar to London, as we speak to singer and songwriter, BaggE.

This artist first came to our attention via the underground London rap staple that is Loudhouse and we’d been waiting for some official releases ever since. Lo and behold, we’ve got with her debut EP, Preserving The Prior, and a feature on a Verbz track, too.

Can you introduce yourself to the people that may not know who you are?

I’m BaggE a neo-soul singer from North London.

Preserving the prior was released very recently – how’s the reception been so far?

It’s been great, as this is my first EP and the first project I’ve put on streaming platforms other than Soundcloud, it’s really lovely to see the support I’ve got from people. It’s a project I’m so proud of and so happy to finally be able to share it.

There’s a lovely jazzy feel to PTP, who do you take influence from?

I feel like I’ve been brought up on the most amazing music which is soul, jazz, blues, reggae, etc and I have many people I take influences from old and new; Etta James, Billie Holiday, Stevie wonder to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Charlotte dos Santos, Mahalia.

We’ve been following you for a while and have been waiting for you to drop some heaters, why is now the right time?

It’s been quite a challenging process if I’m honest. I’m a perfectionist and everything needs to be to a high standard. I wrote Preserving The Prior two years ago but then there is the process of it being re-recorded, mixed, mastered, being pitched and in between that all, thinking if the songs need anymore production or any more harmonies and tweaking here and there.

But all in all I think now was the best time for me to release a project because I am fairly new to the industry and I’ve learned so much in these two years and I’ve grown stronger by getting to know the whole process of how long sometimes it can take and just rolling with it and enjoy the journey.

Who do you listen to in the UK at the moment?

Where to begin!? At the moment I’m listening to Mahalia, Hope Tala, Arlo Parks, Chrsl, Osquello, Jordan Rakei, Kawala, K Le Maestro. So many more aswell the UK’s really doing bits.

How was working with the producer Meslo?

Meslo produced the whole ep and is honestly one of my favourite producers. So far in the industry, I’ve come across a few challenging personalities but Meslo is a breath of fresh air. We have a great way of working together as we have been working together for over 2 years now. He normally comes round to my bedroom studio set up and produces a beat and then I write over it. We normally make a good 3 songs within a session and always come out buzzing and ready to release another project.

Do you have anything else to add?
