Feels good to be back, doesn’t it? Last week you were introduced to Skinnyville, that Leith-London duo that are making waves in London right now. This week, we wanted to speak to NuphZed – the Yogocop affiliate that released his last project three years ago. Well, he’s back and he has a wicked new project that you should all go and listen to. It’s in two halves, the first half being original and previously unheard tracks and the second half, remixes of said tracks.
It’s really good and there are some bloody good visuals for it too.
Alright mate, can you introduce yourself for those who may not know you?
What’s good? I am NuphZed, Brighton based rhyme-sayer, producer and a part of the Yogocop Records famalia.
How long have you been rapping for?
Probably since I was like 14, back in the youth club days, throwing whiteys left, right and centre and tryna rap about weed.
How do you find Brighton as a place to make music?
I love it, G. A lot of my mates are here and they all make music and do it well so it’s constant motivation/inspiration and it’s cool knowing that I can shout numerous different people to work with, whenever, which is a nice vibe – even if they are long as fuck.
Who are some of your favourite rappers and producers at the moment?
I tend to find myself falling victim to Spotify playlists and not researching music as much as I used to if you know what I mean. But I’m getting mad into all the Griselda stuff for sure. More locally, I’m fully rating Para Fiction’s music.
We love everything that Yogocop puts out, but what’s the last few years been like for the label?
It’s been decent man, with Harvs Le Toad dropping his debut solo project as well as Illitamin G, Concept of Thought and the Mr Slipz stuff too. Also was sick seeing the CMPND boys killing it with High Focus. It’s been quieter in regards to MCs/rappers, although focusing on producers and beat tapes have worked really well, which is cool, as I think it caters for other heads who care for instrumentals more than vocals.
Can you tell us a bit about the process of the new project, you’ve been sat on it for a while, right?
Yeah man, to be honest, it was all written and recorded over 3 years ago now but due to me at the time being a pretty unmanageable addict and all the troubles that came with it, I never got round to really finishing it, after going into treatment and starting to get sober I think I realised it might be worth putting it out. I then needed some videos and artwork and all the rest of it, which just took a while.
Not sure what the process was, as I find it hard to remember a lot from those times, it all blurs into one session. I guess the case is, I produce quite regularly and then when a beat jumps out to me I pen to it. Some get recorded and some don’t, no special formula or strategy.
What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?
I have quite a lot of new music to drop which is actually recent and more relevant to where I’m at now, no dates set or anything, just about starting to finish mixes and start with videos etc. I produced an album for Brighton born and bred artist, Maczee P, which will be dropping on YGC. That sounds dope, looking forward to getting that out.
Also some mad funky, upbeat, steppy stuff that me and Hutch have done, which is fully-fledged ADHD, tongue in cheek fun stuff. But again, no dates yet.
I’m just popping to the Offie, can I get you anything?
Yes bruv, anything Reece’s Pieces related, some of them old school scampi crisps, some of them chocolate and hazelnut wafer things and some oat milk. Oh yeah, see if they got any boujee coffee too. Safe.
The floor is yours, give us some shoutouts, a line from your favourite book, a brief description of your favourite dish. Anything goes in this bit.
Big up all the YGC gang, Offie Mag crew and the abundance of reprobates that roam Brighton and can’t stop taking drugs, I feel you. If someone got the plug for trays of school puddings, shout me.
