Something that is old Thursdays: Taylor McFerrin – Early Riser (2014)

Taylor McFerrin, son of jazz great Bobby, is based in Brooklyn, New York, and is a DJ, music producer, pianist, composer, live musician, and has even beatboxed on one of his dad’s songs. This piece celebrates his first full-length LP, Early Riser which was released in June 2014.

The album was released on Flying Lotus’ label, Brainfeeder, and sees Taylor collaborate with some VERY big names. Including but not limited to Jazz legend, Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Nai Palm, and his very own father, Bobby McFerrin as well as various other names. Taylor takes musical influence from a plethora of places, he’s influenced by the legends of 60s/70s Soul, Golden Era hip hop, free form jazz, and even electronic music.  By playing all of the instruments on his productions, while sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges a host of musical worlds together, drawing the listener into his world and creating a constantly changing audio soundscape.

Taylor has toured the world as a one-man show,  he’s played a lot of very serious music festivals including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival. He’s even been the opening act for Erykah Badu, The Roots, Nas, and Robert Glasper.

It’s 41 minutes of heaven in my opinion. If you’ve never listened to it, do so now. I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed.
