Spooky season has officially begun, but in reality this year’s been shit scary since February.
It hasn’t stopped the creativity and good music from flowing, as Offie Mag’s Playlist update gives you yet another month’s worth of new sounds. There’s some new artists on the playlist as well, like South East Londoner muva of Earth whose freeform single Affirmation offers tranquility in these testing times.
One of the more left-field picks comes from Brighton’s KianVsLife. Born A Lady is a journey of a track, beginning with the hardest of hip-hop beats before the multitalented Kian enters with haunting vocals and a genre-fluid delivery that can’t help but make him stand out. Look out for Yewghi, too, an Offie Mag Music of the Month regular, who has released a tape that he reckons is his most complete yet… and the Leeds don didn’t miss.
THAT debut project from Lex Amor is our Pick of the Month, as one of the finest wordsmiths in the country shared Government Tropicana with the world.
We’ve been following Amor since her main vehicle was her Mellowdic radio shows, savouring every track that she has released herself ever since. From beat selection to delivery, the consistency of Lex Amor on this debut tape is remarkable. It’s a real skill for a rapper or any artist to be able to sound so poignant and so loud and clear with such a laid-back delivery.
What’s that phrase about not having to shout the loudest or say the most in order to be heard? That’s Lex Amor’s style when it comes to her music, never wasting a syllable. Quarter Century touches on jazz sounds with the help of the prolific Maxwell Owin, the earlier-released Mazza has Lex in her comfort zone and 341 (Freestyle) has the casual flow and atmospheric quality of an hour’s worth of the radio gold that we know and adore from Lex Amor. Corrrrrr.
Listen out for this music on Offie Mag Radio shows as well, happening every Friday on Platform B, Balamii and our Mixcloud.
