‘Bamboo’: Ebi Soda’s jazz-trap fusion you need to hear

Did you know that in China, bamboo is used for scaffolding? It’s also pretty much the only thing pandas eat. And if you’re only going to consume one piece of music today, make it Ebi Soda’s new cut, ‘Bamboo’, released via Tru Thoughts.

Marking a return to a more DIY approach, ‘Bamboo’ was born from farmhouse recording sessions where the group weaves jazz, hip-hop, and synthesized textures into a psychedelic marvel. A trap-inspired 808
bass carves its own path through the mix, setting the foundation for everything else to follow. “This was the first tune that really clicked on day one of four recording jams at the farmhouse… We’ve been making jazz with 808s as the bass since 'Keisha Billip' on Ugh, but this was the first time we felt we successfully captured a more psychedelic American ‘trap’ sound (à la Pi’erre Bourne) when we’ve normally made nods to grime and drill in the past.”

And they’ve nailed that energy—trust me, as Offie Mag’s resident Pi’erre Bourne expert, I’d know. You will find yourself falling into a trance listening to ‘bamboo’ the same way as you do with ‘Hell Shell’ and maybe the only way they could’ve improved this was if they got a Young Nudy feature.

‘Bamboo’ follows the group’s sophomore effort, Honk If You’re Sad, and if this is a taste of what’s to come, we’ll all be honking—not because we’re sad, but because we’re happy...
