Eden Bareket Introduces Zaman With ‘New World’

Eden Bareket releases ‘New World’, a Moroccan Chaabi–jazz fusion led by baritone sax, as part of the rollout for his next album Zaman. It’s the first in a monthly single series that will run until August, and if ‘New World’ is anything to go by, the full project is shaping up to be one well worth listening to.

Our last issue was all about jazz, I wrote about my own journey of discovering my love for it. Of course, I urge you to pick up a copy, but in short, it was about how daunting getting into jazz can feel, and how it made me ask: “What is good jazz?” A question that, despite all my listening, I still don’t have a clear answer to.

Even without that answer, I do know what I look for in music: harmonic interest, rhythmic energy, a strong sense of melody, and above all, that feeling of being impressed if I were hearing it live for the first time. ‘New World’ ticks every one of those boxes — and then some.

Blending jazz improvisation with the story of Jewish migration to Argentina, the track carries a deeply personal narrative for now New York–based Bareket. Through this project, he traces his family’s history across four continents, embracing earthy, ancient rhythms to tell the story of his ancestors.

I’ve always found that the best music carries a personal touch. You can hear how much it means to an artist, and when that story comes through, the results are often something truly special.
