Lee Scott's released a new project, then: la scala.
Truth be told, I was sold on this project right from the opening track where the Runcorn-raised rapper tells an unnamed figure that they're 'sending me to sleep like rain on a cabin roof.'
Whilst there's little doubt that this line was intended as a put-down, I'd argue that there's something to be said about the upsides of such a sensation. The pitter-patter of rain on a roof or a bedroom window is not something I will ever tire of, but rather, something that reassures me.
The world is still happening outside and you're warm and dry in here, whether you own your own cabin, rent one, or live at your mum's. So calm down, mate.
Having been making music in one form or another since he was rapping about cartoons as a kid, Lee Scott sounds beyond calm on every beat that la scala offers, mastering his art form and expressing that in a sense of comfort that only a decade or two of releasing music can allow.
And having listened to him grow comfier and comfier within his music for a decade or so myself, Scott's music has a similar effect on me. In the case of Lee Scott's pitter-patter, I'm reassured that someone’s out there putting words to the oddities, annoyances, and simple comforts of everyday life. Someone's creating for themselves first, because, as he raps at some point on this 7-track mixtape: “Don’t let ‘I wish I did’ be your last words.'”
