SIP O' THAT is where Offie Mag writers get down 50 words or less about the best new independent music.
Working through the latest update to our Music of the Month playlist this time is editor-in-chief, Greg Stanley, who has kindly taken time away from a particularly addictive Football Manager simulation game to tell you why you should listen to SAAGAR, Vayda, ohbliv and more.
Vayda - fever
To paraphrase, she does what she wants, and we call it art. We also call it infectious rap from Atalanta. ATTNWH0RE's production varies from dizzying tempos like 'heart eyez' to swooning dips like 'Dont Waste Time Want Me,' whilst Vayda remains a constant, spitting with mesmerising freedom.
Santana Fox - Eye Candy
Proof is in the pudding and the pudding is Eye Candy. Santana Fox raps on boom bap and in doing so, proves that Hip Hop's most prominent onomatopoeia is not bland if you get the right protagonist on top of it. This is skilled artistry, not a spiritual lyrical miracle.
Kelvo - Got2Change
The smoke clears on this one. In giving 'thanks and way for the blessings' on the hook, Kelvo raps himself into a humble epiphany. He also gives way to a wonderful vocal sample that leads the narrative and title of the young rapper's most refined release so far.
Jon Phonics - Say Less
Englishman in New York Jon Phonics finds records on the street and turns them into beats that could clear the papers off your desk. Say Less has zero vocal features and yet it feels like this legal alien gets plenty off of his chest.
BXKS - One Time
The latest EP from BXKS is sounding like the Best Of. Luton might be fighting for survival in the Premier League right now, but the town's finest rap export is toppa the league. Connecting golden era Grime with whatever era we're in right now, 'One Time' might be more than just the Best of BXKS.
NxxxxS - YOU COULD DIE !?
YOU COULD GET NxxxxS TO DO A FILM SCORE AND IT WOULD WIN AN OSCAR !?
gorse panshawe - earth, air, fire & water
Freakishly good music from the Activia Benz imprint that once gave you salad, and now gives you 'earth, air, fire & water.' What more could you possibly want? How about the feeling that you're being chased on track 1, the elation of escape on track 6 and the realisation, as you pop your off-brand AirPods off one-by-one, that you can do this journey again anytime you want?
Scuti - Comfy
Another Scuti track that blends the dark and the light. Sincere subject matter pulled off with a sense of humour, a wry laugh even, over production from Switzerland’s gizmo7k.
ewonee - Do Your Dance b/w The World Is Ours
Try and listen to this without moving your head challenge ™. Not content with being one of the finest Hip Hop producers in the US underground, ewonee comes to rescue dancefloors with this one. Get it on your USB, kids.
ohbliv - Life Infinite
I seriously doubt there are two fans of ohbliv wouldn't get on. Let's take two of his Bandcamp customers at random, pay for their petrol and put them on a road trip to North Wales. Like the producer whose catalogue they have in common, they would delve into music appreciation all the way along the A4069 Black Mountain Pass.
SAAGAR - FALL2HARD*!
Finch Fetti (Finch Fetti producer tag voice) and SAAGAR combine here for 3 tracks of super-sweet-pop rap with a somewhat sinister aftertaste. A snobbish instinct hears those manufactured vocals and writes them off as whimsical, but you hear a songwriter using whatever tools he can to make you feel something. So feel it (extremely high-pitched SAAGAR voice).
