SIP O' THAT 001: The Best New Independent Music

Welcome to SIP O' THAT.

Toco - As Vezes

‘Bada ba bada…’ You’re Tony Bourdain on the beach in Brazil looking for a Caipirinha. A football rolls your way and you kick it back to where it came with such competence that no one laughs at you in Portuguese. ‘Bada ba bada…’

Jahari Massamba Unit - Massamba Afundance

Jahari Massamba Unit is the boundary-free project of drummer and producer Karriem Riggins and that Bad Kid, Madlib. Do I even need any more words? Have these. Otis Jackson Jr ages like the fine wine he holds in his Boiler Room set that was sponsored by a cheap lager.

Nile Martin - my way on

Marvel at the minimalism. The spoken-words with their high-pitch copycat echo make a beeline for this song’s intentions, before the whistling of a man sounding content with a new persona sees you out.

E. Lundquist - Holy Mountain

This one doesn’t stop climbing does it? Like going up one of them glass lifts at Willy Wonka’s gaff. Save the cheesy show tunes, we wanna hear a rapper who starts every verse by clearing their throat rap on this.

Mr Bones, Clbrks - This Life

‘Half man, half sample’ reads the bio of Mr Bones. Throw in a whole Clbrks and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable Hip Hop track. The vocal sample is the chorus, the most cultured Millwall fan you’ll ever meet at a house party is on the verses. Keep it simple, stupid.

jarjarjr - Somethin’ Special

He’s an Irish producer, jarjarjr. He plucks samples and he plucks his bass. ‘Somethin’ Special’ sounds improvised as if he’s built the tracks whilst riding the train. It’s cohesive but changing, ongoing and full of delays.

Immi Larusso, dylantheinfamous, Nil Wan - Work It Out

If this is your first time eating here at Offie Mag, we suggest you start with this. It’s your bread and butter. It’s unpretentious. It’s organic. It’s locally sourced. It’s underground Hip Hop from a place where dinner is called ‘tea’ and where tea is served with milk unless told otherwise.

Chuck Strangers - Forsaken Lover’s Plea

Sounds like Chuck wrote this one in handwriting on lined paper by candle light, put it in an envelope sealed with one of them sticky red things, mailed it to the studio, reopened it with a pocket knife and read it out loud for the first time in the booth.

DāM-FunK - DāM-FunK presents The Music of Grand Theft Auto Online Original Score

R1, R2, L1, X, LEFT, DOWN, RIGHT, UP, LEFT, DOWN, RIGHT, UP.

Pink Shabab - Hometown

Hometown is a great concept from the globe-trotting soda pop artist. My hometown is who I really am. And who I really am is a man from Basingstoke who just wants play Football Manager on a laptop and listen to Pink Shabab.
