Welcome to SIP O' THAT, your quick helping of new independent music releases.
This time our 50-words-or-less reviews come from Louis 'Wachuwan' Rowland, as the Brighton-based producer and journalist-by-moonlight takes his pick from our Music of the Month playlist.
Mercury - Bounty
Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with everyone’s favourite Celebration, however, Merc never fails to bring a party to whatever beat she’s floating on. Never intimidated to push her own boundaries she can effortlessly go from hard-hitting Jersey bangers to light and spacey trap.
evilgiane - #HEAVENSGATE VOL.1
Slimesito recently told The Fader that “Even though Giane be making sample drill, he know how to do it in a way where it don’t sound like New York.” His credits span from A$AP Rocky and Earl Sweatshirt to Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem. Time to drink the Kool-aid, evilgiane is taking over.
Mercury - Jelly ft. Niontay
If jelly is jam, then what do they call jelly? I don’t know, but with Mercury’s second appearance this month, she got Niontay to come say wassup. Blunt rolled, PB&J prepped, just call it a good time.
John Glacier - Like A Ribbon
Following her SURF GANG collaboration JGSG, John Glacier is back with Like A Ribbon. John invites us to join her on the next phase of her artistry and she is as eloquent as ever, with Kwes Darko, Vegyn and Flume providing beats which further captivate. I can confirm that as you might expect, Like A Ribbon is as cold as John’s name suggests but as she keeps on reminding us on “Emotions” she is the hottest in the game.
David Armada - black glass.
An Armada can sometimes be known as a large force or group of usually moving things and you will definitely find me usually moving to David’s first release from his upcoming album. The South London rapper shines on this one, featuring production from Kxmel and Cotton.
Headtriiip - the song bird who loves me
This tape makes me feel like I’m stuck in one of my mum's home videos and for better or worse I can’t get out. In under 25 minutes, headtriiip brings us into his own world in an intensely personal way highlighted by his sample selection.
Lewis OfMan - Cristal Medium Blue
What a producer's record. He is really doing it for all the Lous and I can only be thankful. Lewis is really flexing his muscles here, covering all bases. Truly worth a listen for whatever mood you’re currently in.
Nourished By Time - Hands On Me
London-based singer-songwriter Marcus Brown shares the lead single from his upcoming debut release under XL Records Catching Chickens. Keep your chickens, just give me what is sure to be an excellent follow-up to 2023’s Erotic Probiotic 2 from this mind-bogglingly good artist.
dreamcastmoe - MOLLY’S SON
Davon Bryant, aka dreamcastmoe, returns with MOLLY’S SON. In his own words, ‘This project is about being back home, finding my groove as an adult and enjoying the little things.’ A tune we can all dance to.
