In 2022, Offie Mag was among thousands of watery-eyed festivalgoers watching Pharoah Sanders perform alongside his child Tomoki at We Out Here. It would prove to be the legendary saxophonist's final live performance before his passing the following month.
A year later, we watched Tomoki charge through a crowd that parted like the Red Sea during Kassa Overall's set at the same festival. Two very different performances, both unforgettable.
Now, the New York-born multi-instrumentalist and composer has announced their debut solo album, Visage: The Third Eye, arriving on Brownswood Recordings on February 12th, 2027.
Introduced to the saxophone by their father at ten, Tomoki Sanders has since worked with artists including Ravi Coltrane, Kassa Overall, Taylor McFerrin and Mark de Clive-Lowe.
Where Pharoah helped take jazz into new spiritual and improvisational territory, Tomoki belongs to a generation finding further possibilities in hip-hop, electronic production and the broader traditions of Black American Music.
Early singles offer a glimpse of that thinking. “Jazz Is Just A Game”, featuring Nicholas Payton and Mélanie Charles, questions the conventions and inequalities surrounding the music, while the latest release, “Tranquil Memories”, honours Tomoki's late friend and fellow musician Rodney James-Spann.
