Brighton-based record label Tru Thoughts have released more magic from Sharky, as the nu jazz artist pairs with El Payo for a remix of the track Memories of Vortex.
As she mentions in the notes alongside the record, the song was inspired by a 'twisted night' in the London jazz club Vortex.
"This song is about me coming to some home truths about myself, and about remembering the highs and lows of one twisted night at Vortex Jazz Club. After an ex-boyfriend who had left me broken-hearted tapped me on the shoulder, it was all a bit too much. At the time it felt like my world had exploded, but now I see it was a big night with a lot of lessons and closure.”
The track has a dreamy quality but a good pace, petering out towards the end in what feels like a complete narrative arc coming back down to earth. Sharky, real-name Georgia Mason, originally released this track on her debut LP People Are Strange, and South African producer El Payo has reimagined it to bring it from jazz club to nightclub.
