Brighton artist Matthew Muli samples field recordings to make lo-fi rap magic

Matthew Muli is a Brighton artist we're excited about.

all is not lost is a collection of songs created by producer, rapper, poet and 1BTN radio show host Matthew Muli a year ago, in December 2021.

The tunes on the tape are raw, and the production is mixed - with some songs purposely quieter than others. The majority of the samples from the tape are field recordings from Matthew’s solo trips to church. There are instrumentals mixed in as well, with the end result sounding like an artist's sketch book of rough ideas that's been brought to life.

And yet, look deeper at the abstraction and it tells the story of maintaining hope amid the sadness, where Matthew concludes, as the title suggests, that all is not lost.
